6 dead, more than 100 injured in Taliban bomb attacks in the Afghanistan capital

The religious movement blew up a strong bomb in downtown national capital on Mon, killing a minimum of six individuals and wounding over 100 individuals, and causing smoke clouds billowing into the Afghanistan capital.

At least 26 children were among the injured, many of them cut by broken glass when the bomb destroyed nearby windows, said government spokesman Feroz Bashari. He said a total of 105 people were injured.

A spokesman for the ministry of education, Nooria Nazhat, then increased the number of students who were slightly injured to 51, from two schools.

The Taliban claimed the attack, which occurred when militants held the final round of negotiations with US envoy Zalmay Khalilzad in the Gulf state of Qatar, where they have a political office.
The attack ended almost 10 hours after it began with the five attackers killed, according to Interior Ministry spokesman Nasrat Rahimi.

Two policemen, a child, a private security guard and two passersby were killed in the attack which began with a powerful car bomb, followed by a series of small explosions and gun battles throughout the day, Rahimi said.
The Italian-run Emergency Hospital in Kabul - one of the largest hospitals in the Afghan capital that treats victims of war - said in a statement that it had received two bodies, including a child. Dozens additional slashed were treated, many of them later released.
The rebels attacked during the morning trip, and the ambulance sirens roared in the downtown area.
Mohammad Karim, a police official in the area of the attack, said a car bomb exploded outside the Ministry of Defense building. The militants then ran to a nearby high-rise building located in a crowded market and began shooting at the ministry. Afghan police and special security forces pour into the area and close it.

Mohammad Farooq, the closest restaurant owner, said the blast blew up a private school window, injuring several students.
The capital has been relatively quiet in recent months after a series of bombings, many claimed by local Islamic affiliates. The Taliban have carried out a number of attacks in Kabul in recent years, most targeting installations or Afghan and U.S. military convoys.

The US condemned the attack. A statement from press secretary Stephanie Grisham said that "insolent attacks showed ignorance of the Taliban towards their fellow Afghans, who have repeatedly voiced the urgency to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict."
Pakistan additionally condemned Monday's attack, language "such attacks damage peace, security and stability in Asian nation." Islamic Republic of Pakistan and Asian nation habitually exchange charges of concealing different militant enemies.
Pakistan has reportedly urged the Taliban - many of them have homes in Pakistan - in talks. Last week the country hosted Afghan President Ashraf Ghani for the first time when the two countries tried to restore their troubled relations.

The latest talks between the United States and the Taliban meanwhile lasted until the third day. The Taliban said their focus was to get a schedule announcement for the withdrawal of US and NATO forces from Afghanistan. This announcement is likely to be accompanied by the Taliban's promise to hold intra-Afghan talks and agree to an eventual ceasefire.
